Students looking to participate in SYRC are usually between the grades of 9-12, although we often make exceptions for younger students who still want to contribute to the team. If you are older than the age limit for members, we are always open to inviting new members of any age group! As for location, Spark Youth Robotics is based in the Ottawa Valley and would prefer for members to be close to headquarters.

Each year’s kickoff event unveils a new, exciting, and challenging game. From the kickoff, teams have limited time to build and program a robot to compete in the game using a kit of parts provided by FIRST and a standard set of rules. Learn more about the current season game at
All FIRST robotics teams are split into three time periods that depend on the time of the year. Every year, in January, FIRST releases the game that will be played throughout all tournaments in the coming year. These tournaments take place for 4 months up till April and determine who wins the FIRST World Championships. This is considered build-season as it is the time for teams to make their robots. Then, the next few months of the year are off-season, where there are no major events and teams are generally inactive. Finally, in the couple of months before January, teams enter pre-season to warm up their members and learn about new concepts to use in the coming build season! The best time to join our team is during pre-season, however we welcome new members at all times of the year!
No, not at all! We find that it is a common misconcepetion that holds students back from joining our team. In fact, many of our members did not have any experience whatsoever when they first joined our team. Building on your knowledge and gaining experiences is one of the beautiful aspects of joining a FIRST robotics team, and a major reason why the FIRST league was created.
